Custom Garage and Basement Shelving in Crown Point, IN

Crown Point splits two ways: century old homes near the square with block or stone basements, and new builds on the edge of town with tall clean walls. I build shelving for both, and you get your price on a video call or an onsite visit.

Crown Point, Lake County

One town, two completely different builds

Crown Point is the Lake County seat, and you can read that in the houses. Around the downtown square the homes are old and square built, set on stone or block, with basements where the joists sit low over your head and the walls have shifted a little in the century since somebody laid them. Head out toward the edge of town and it flips. New construction, framed walls, tall clean basements, and a garage with a big empty wall above the door.

Same town. Same phone call. Two jobs that share almost nothing except the way the shelf carries a load.

So the first thing I ask a Crown Point homeowner is which part of town the house is in. Near the square I am planning masonry fasteners, short bays and a lot of measuring. Out on the edge I am usually looking at the fastest install of the week.

A clear basement floor with wood shelving along the wall holding storage totes and seasonal boxes.

Near the square: old walls, and the tape measure earns its keep

An older Crown Point basement is a good room to build in. It is just not a room you can build in by assumption. Four things change, and all 4 of them get decided before anything is cut.

None of that is a problem. It is just a different day. The build underneath is the same one I use everywhere: ledgers anchored into the structure, doubled where the load calls for it, front uprights to the floor, cross supports, plywood decks. What changes in an old house is what the ledger is anchored to and how much of the day goes into fitting.

Out toward the edge of town

A new build is the easiest wall I get all week

Newer Crown Point houses hand me everything I want. Framed basement walls with studs on a known spacing, so the ledger goes on with lag screws and no hunting. Ceilings tall enough to run 5 tiers instead of 3. A garage with clean drywall, a tall wall above the door, and nothing in the way except the garage door track.

That means two things for you. The run can go taller, because the height is genuinely there, and the day is shorter, because I am not solving the house before I start the shelves.

The other thing about a new build is timing. If the boxes from the move are still stacked in the middle of the basement floor, that is the best possible moment to do this. Nothing has found a permanent home yet, so nothing has to be moved twice. Build the wall, then put things away once, in the place they are going to live.

What actually changes between the two

Both get the same system. Here is where the day is different, so you know what I am looking at when you walk me around on the call.

What I build in Crown Point

Pick the room and I will tell you what it takes

The same structure in every one of these. What changes is the wall it is anchored to and the stuff that is in the way.

Garage shelving

Floor to ceiling wood shelving sized to your bins, with the garage door track, the service door swing and the tall wall above the door all drawn in first.

Basement storage shelving

Everything up off the floor. In an older basement that matters twice over, because those floors have usually taken water at some point.

See how it works

Wall-mounted and heavy-duty shelving

The structure itself: ledgers anchored into stud framing or into block, front uprights to the floor, cross supports under every plywood deck.

Utility and storage room shelving

The furnace corner, the laundry, and the space under the basement stairs. Small rooms in old houses are all angles, so they get measured.

Garage and basement organization

The whole job. Sort what is there, build the wall, then give the totes and the seasonal gear somewhere they belong for good.

The rest of The Region

Crown Point is one of 9 towns I build in across Lake County, and the estimate works the same way in all of them.

How the estimate works

3 steps, and your price comes on the call

Your choice, either way. Text me and I will confirm a time, usually the same day. Three steps, about ten minutes.

1

Text me

Text me your town, what you want shelves in, and a couple of day and time windows that work. Texting is the fastest way to get hold of me.

2

Video call or I come out

Your choice. Most people do a short video call from their phone. If you would rather I came and stood in the space, I will do that too.

3

Get your price

I price the job right there, on the call or in your driveway. No waiting a week for a proposal.

Crown Point is farther south, and the call is why that does not matter

I live in Munster, up at the top of the county. Crown Point is a straight run down US 231 or in off Main Street, and I am down there often enough. But the drive is not the reason you will get a fast answer, and I would rather be honest about that than pretend a truck is always in the neighborhood.

The reason is that the estimate is a video call. You pick a couple of windows that suit you, we get on your phone, you walk me along the wall and give me rough measurements, and I price the job before we hang up. Nobody waits for a Tuesday when someone happens to be south. Crown Point, Merrillville or St. John, it is the same 10 minute call and the same real number at the end of it. You can see the whole service area here.

It also means nothing to tidy before somebody comes over, which matters more than people admit when the room in question is the one they have been avoiding. When I do turn up, it is the day I build the shelves, and most jobs are finished in a day. It is me on the call and me on the ladder, and the work is backed by a workmanship warranty. Crown Point shelving questions

My house is near the square and the basement walls are stone. Can you build on that?

Yes. Stone and old block foundations are normal walls to build on, they just get different fasteners. The ledger goes on with masonry fasteners set into the solid material rather than lag screws into studs, and I keep them clear of the mortar joints where I can. The front uprights still carry to the floor, so the old wall is sharing the load instead of holding all of it. I will want to see the wall on the call, because stone varies a lot from house to house.

The basement ceiling in my old house is low. Is shelving still worth it?

Yes, and usually more than in a tall basement, because low rooms waste the most space. You do not need one uninterrupted wall. You need the height you actually have, used properly: full height bays where the ceiling is clear, shorter bays under the duct trunk and the water line, and the tall bins sorted into the tall bays. It reads as deliberate when it is finished, because it is.

My walls are not square. Will the shelves look crooked?

They will not, because they get fitted to the wall rather than built square to a wall that is not. The back edge is scribed to follow the wall and the uprights are shimmed to plumb, so the fronts line up and the gap disappears. That fitting is the slow part of an older house, and it is the part that makes it look built in.

We just moved into a new build on the edge of town. Should we do this before we unpack?

If you can, yes. In a new house nothing has a permanent home yet, so building the wall first means you put things away once instead of moving them twice. New builds are also the quickest job I do. The walls are framed, the studs are on a known spacing, and the ceiling is tall enough to get real tiers out of the run.

Is Crown Point too far south for you?

No. Crown Point is one of the 9 towns I serve, and the estimate is a video call, so there is no travel to schedule and nothing extra on the price for the drive. What drives the number is the job: how much wall you are covering, how deep the shelves need to be, and how many tiers.

Can you do the garage and the basement in the same visit?

Often, but not always. A single garage wall or one basement run is comfortably a one day job. Both rooms in one day depends on how much wall we are covering. Show me both on the call and I will tell you straight whether it is one day or two before you book anything.
